Neuro-linguistic programming in learning and education by ChangeWorx
How do you think the human brain processes and understands different languages? Where does the brain store the words that we learn? Sometimes when we forget, why do words come to mind? For people who are fluent in more than one language, what keeps the language understanding separate while speaking or understanding? Well, all thanks to neurolinguistics that allows us to study how language is represented in the brain. This area analyses how and where the knowledge of different languages is stored in the brain along with its different presentations.
Here, it is important to understand that the brain stores all the information it received in neural networks connecting to the parts controlling movements like speech, and internal and external sensations. Whenever new connections are made or existing ones are strengthened, knowledge or skill learning occurs.
What is Neuro-linguistic programming?
A way of changing a person’s thoughts and habits to achieve success through perception, communication techniques and behaviour is called neuro-linguistic programming. Based on neural connections, especially the ability to process language, it is a pseudoscientific approach. It has become one of the popular alternatives to self-help or personal development.
People often learn through their sensory experiences. Therefore, they send a message to their brain that will interpret the information depending on these experiences. Here, Neuro-linguistic programming then tries to identify and alter the unconscious limitations of each person within their mental connections.
For example, suppose a person has associated green vegetables with something not tasty because, in childhood, their parents forced him to eat them before playing. In that case, as an adult, he will avoid eating anything that contains green vegetables. Although this perception does not reflect his current reality or is based on taste, as long as it does not alter the mental connection he has with green vegetables, his dislike will persist. Neuro-linguistic programming will help to modify these limitations.
Neuro-linguistic programming in education
When we talk about Student NLP or an NLP Certification, knowing about it provides educators with an advantage of understanding what motivates the students and further adapting their teaching methods to suit them. This offers learning strategies that help students develop skills for more optimal learning and allows teachers access to tools to deal with challenging behaviours.
There are two neuro-linguistic programming techniques that are considered useful in solving several education problems – perceptual positioning and presupposition. Perceptual positioning is the ability to see things from other people’s viewpoints. It generates active participation and physical movement that triggers a chance of thought much better than just understanding perspective. And the second one, presupposition, is related to unspoken meanings in a conversation.
One should know that all communication potentially influences learning. It is sought to identify what distinguishes a successful person and a means to study how people process information, develop neural connections and build skills to get results. Moreover, learning about the learning process results in having profound teaching methods and being instructed.
